Colorado State predicts active hurricane season with 16 named storms

Hurricane season begins on June 1.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — With the world dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic, it's hard to believe that hurricane season is right around the corner. But, it is.

On Thursday morning, a group of forecasters at Colorado State University released their early predictions for the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season.

The average hurricane season has 12 named storms. CSU is predicting 16. On average, there are six hurricanes. The university is predicting eight.

Four of the storms are predicted to be major hurricanes.

Hurricane season ends on Nov. 30. 

NOAA will release its own outlook later in spring.
