The fifth hurricane of the 2020 season developed Wednesday evening. Tropical Storm Nana has intensified into a hurricane before making landfall in Belize.
Hurricane Nana made landfall at about 2 a.m in Belize between Dangriga and Placencia.
Nana, the season’s 14th tropical storm, formed Tuesday about 120 miles south-southwest of Kingston, Jamaica.
There have now been five hurricanes so far in this record-setting Atlantic season: Hanna, Isais, Laura, Marco, and Nana.
Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Omar continues to experience storm-weakening wind shear diminishing the storm. Omar, the season’s 15th named tropical storm east of the North Carolina coast on Tuesday, about five hours after Nana.
We are now entering the peak part of the Atlantic hurricane season, and there is plenty to watch. Aside from Nana and Omar, there are a couple of disturbances being tracked in the tropical Atlantic.
The remaining names for storms this season in the Atlantic are: Paulette, Rene, Sally, Teddy, Vicky and Wilfred. If all of those names get used, the National Hurricane Center will start using the Greek alphabet.
