TAMPA, Fla. — When it comes to preparing for hurricanes in Florida, the first thing that comes to mind is usually putting together a kit with food, water and supplies.
While those are all things people should have ready, the National Weather Service says you should also check up on your insurance coverage.
The NWS says people in hurricane-prone areas should call their insurance company or agent and make sure they have enough insurance to repair or even replace things that could get damaged or destroyed in a storm.
The NWS also has this reminder: standard homeowners insurance doesn’t cover flooding. Both homeowners and renters need a separate policy to cover flooding. If people aren't covered for flood insurance, they may want to set it up quickly because it requires a 30-day waiting period.
Plus, people should also check to make sure their cars and boats have the right coverage, too.
The NWS says people should know where their insurance documents are and take them if they need to evacuate.
More information on flood insurance can be found online here, or through an insurance company or agency.
