ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — If felt great to see a rainy day yesterday.
We haven’t had measurable rainfall officially in Tampa since late February. Rain was reported during five different hours yesterday at Tampa International Airport. It seemed like lots and lots of rain was falling from the sky. But at the end of the day, the rain gauge only measured six hundredths of inch.
To put that in perspective -- imagine an inch of rain being a candy bar. Of course, you want the entire candy bar. You need the entire candy bar.
Now, cut the candy bar into 10 tiny sections. Of those 10 tiny sections of candy , you got just a bit more than half of one of them.
That’s it. No more.
What’s that mean for your parched yard in terms of water? Well, six hundredths of inch of rain isn’t much rainfall for our grass and plants.
More perspective now -- An inch of rain would equal 4.7 gallons of water per square yard (every 3’x3’ section) of your lawn.
That’s a lot. But divide that water, like the candy bar, into 10 sections and you have under a half gallon of water per section. Our six hundredths of inch of rain would only be about a quart of water for every square yard of your lawn.
That's not a lot. But we all know beggars can’t be choosers, so we’ll take it.
Everything outside just seemed happy yesterday. Plus, Tampa Bay, and much of Florida, are in a moderate drought. Yesterday’s rain won’t change that and there’s not much rain in the forecast this week. Dry weather is expected through Thursday, with rain chances increasing a bit for the weekend.
