Between high pressure in the Atlantic and Tropical Storm Cristobal in the southern Gulf of Mexico, tropical moisture will continue to surge over Tampa Bay leading to numerous showers and thunderstorms throughout the day.
In fact, the rest of the week is expected to see increasing chances of occasional waves of rain and thunderstorms. Locally heavy rainfall is expected in places.
The heavy rain could produce flooding of low-lying and poor drainage areas as well as the ponding of water on roadways. Drivers should be sure to exercise caution.
On Wednesday afternoon, the National Weather Service issued a flood watch for the Tampa Bay area. It lasts through 2 p.m. on Saturday.
The morning weather balloon launch shows a pronounced increase in available moisture in our atmosphere from 24 hours ago. Precipitable water, the measure of the depth of liquid water at the surface that would result after precipitating all of the water vapor in a vertical column over a given location, is showing 1.85 inches is possible.
Not every area will see this much rain, but the potential is there.
Rain chances will stay elevated through the weekend as Tropical Storm Cristobal makes its way through the Gulf.
