ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — You may be asking yourself amid these chilly temperatures: Is Florida broken? What is going on?
It is wintertime, yes, but the cold weather here in the Sunshine State can come as a shock!
The thermometer dipped into the 30s and 40s Wednesday morning across parts of the Tampa Bay area. The cold start today will repeat in a way with another chilly start tomorrow.
A cold front yesterday brought us storms and shower activity, ultimately clearing out our skies and dropping our temperatures.
We begin to warm back up and become more humid and muggy Thursday into Friday, with increasing rain chances as a warm front moves through.
The next cold front late Friday into Saturday will drop our temperatures dramatically yet again all across Tampa Bay. We potentially could be waking up to 36 degrees for a low temperature on Sunday. This next front could be bringing us the coldest air we’ve seen all season.
El Niño continues to keep us in this cycle of front after front: we warm up, we see more muggy conditions, rain chances increase and once the cold front pushes past our area, it clears our skies and drops our temperatures and humidity.
So when do we get a break from the chilly temperatures?
Finally, in the next 10 days, weather forecast models have us warming up to the upper 70s and low 80s for the majority of next week. This cold weather won't last forever, so try to enjoy outdoor activities while bundling up and by next week, you can ditch the jacket.
