HOMOSASSA, Fla. — Powerful storms ripped apart buildings and left the roof of at least one home dangling from a power line Monday in Citrus County.
The National Weather Service has confirmed a waterspout moved onshore near Homosassa, and that area of rotation then moved east -- causing a narrow path of damage. It wreaked havoc on a mobile home park near Buzzard Point, leaving two structures with major damage and seven with minor damage.
Many trees were downed or snapped in Homosassa Springs Wildlife Park. The NWS says a billboard also went down, the sail was blown off a gas station and a business was damaged on U.S. Highway 19 and Grover Cleveland Boulevard.
According to the NWS, the tornado was an EF-0 and had estimated peak winds of 80 mph. Its path length was 7.25 miles and its maximum width was 35 yards.
The thunderstorm cells meteorologists were tracking on Monday produced several tornado warnings across Florida. In the Wildwood area, a driver captured video of another possible tornado on I-75.
Mark Smith, the owner of Homosassa Springs Marina, captured the below video of the aftermath. It shows trees and power lines on the ground and damage to buildings.
Homosassa Tanning owner Gilbert Witchel posted a video, urging people to be careful if they're driving into the area. The footage shows debris in the roadway and emergency crews responding to the scene.
More than 1,000 Duke Energy customers are without power in Citrus County. Another 1,000 people are without power in Pasco County, and 400 have no power in Hillsborough.
At least four teams of firefighters are surveying the damage on the west side of the county. That damage extends from the area of Highway 19 all the way to Halls River Road.
"Be cautious if you are traveling in the area," Citrus County Professional Firefighters IAFF Local 4562 said.
