You don't want to wait until the last minute to have your hurricane kit ready. You should have it on stand by through out the hurricane season.
- Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation
- Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
- Flashlight and extra batteries
- First aid kit
- Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
- Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
- Manual can opener for food
- Local maps
All of the items listed above totaled up to $70.
A few other recommended items a battery-powered or hand crank radio that costs $15 to $25 and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both. Those will run you $30 to $50 at a discount store. A solar cell phone charger costs about $25.
A whistle to signal for help and a dust mask to filter contaminated air are also a good idea to have on hand.
