TAMPA, Fla. — After the coronavirus pandemic kept a majority of passengers away from airports the past two years, Tampa International Airport says business is once again booming.

According to the airport, passenger counts in recent days are up 29 percent from where they were in 2019. And, with the spring break travel season beginning this weekend, the region could be in for a record year.

TPA says this season, the airport will see peak days that reach nearly 88,000 passengers —  that would be on par with 2019 which the airport says broke all kinds of records.

"The marked rise in passengers over the past few weeks reflects the rapidly returning demand for travel combined with a lessened fear as COVID-19 cases drop sharply around the globe," TPA said in a news release.

"Many countries have loosened restrictions and testing protocols, particularly for vaccinated travelers, and more tourist attractions and destinations have comfortably reopened with safety measures in place," it continued.

On top of all the domestic travel coming to Tampa, TPA says it's also seeing international traffic make a comeback. British Airways recently resumed nonstop flights to London and Eurowings Discover launched flights to Frankfurt in December.

The spring travel season will run until April 26, according to TPA.
