TAMPA, Fla. — The record for the most airline passengers screened at US airports in a day was broken on the Friday before Memorial Day weekend. So, it's no surprise that Monday has been a busy day for travelers at Tampa International Airport.

TPA has seen 135 delays and 8 cancellations as of 5 p.m. this Memorial Day. In total, there are 511 flights scheduled to arrive or depart from the airport on Monday.

Passengers should check with their airlines for the most updated flight information.

TPA hasn't said exactly what's causing the delays, but airport officials have said that they're expecting 3.4 million passengers throughout the summer — 4% more than last year.

If you want to avoid a turbulent travel day this summer, TPA officials gave a few tips to save time, and money, before you head to the airport.

1. Arrive early: This means at least two hours early for domestic flights and three hours early for international flights.

*Bonus tip: You can avoid waiting in line for food or coffee by using the Uber Eats app to order ahead of time for pickup.

2. Pre-pay for parking: Pre-booking parking at TampaAirport.com/park allows you to enter a separate line and simply scan a QR code to get into the garage. Plus, pre-booking parking online is always cheaper.

3. Double-check your bag: Bringing prohibited items through TSA screening could delay the process or even get you in trouble with the law. So far this year, TPA has already found 27 improperly packed firearms in checked luggage.
