TAMPA, Fla. — Travel woes continue across the U.S. and right here in the Tampa Bay area for people trying to catch a flight.
According to Tampa International Airport's website, as of Friday morning, more than 40 flights have been canceled that are either departing or arriving and several more have been delayed.
And it's not just TPA seeing major delays. FlightAware data shows about 2,220 flights have been canceled so far for Friday across the U.S. Nearly 400 flights are also being delayed.
A combination of continued winter weather and staffing shortages appear to be to blame for the ongoing delays. Much of the U.S. has either experienced winter storms or is bracing for them going into the weekend.
Staffing shortages and weather conditions have continually caused major delays and flight cancellations since the holidays.
Southwest continues to see the most effects, according to FlightAware. Other airlines including JetBlue and Alaska Airlines are also seeing a large percentage of flights canceled, FlightAware data shows.
On Thursday, Southwest tweeted it was "experiencing an increase in flight disruptions and longer than usual customer service wait times due to a combination of winter weather and staffing challenges."
Tens of thousands of flights have been canceled since the days leading up to Christmas and the new year, thanks in part to rising COVID-19 cases fueled by the omicron variant.
