Traveling for Memorial Day? Gas prices similar to last year, AAA says

A record number of Floridians are expected to travel for the holiday.

TAMPA, Fla. — Memorial Day weekend is just days away, promising to kick off the summer season. While the holiday was established to mourn our fallen service members, the weekend has become a time for deals and vacations for many people.

If you're one of the projected record-setting 2.5 million Floridians set to travel for Memorial Day weekend, you might wonder how much you'll have to pay at the pump.

According to AAA, the current average gas price in Florida is around $3.50 per gallon as of Tuesday. AAA experts say that prices might go down slightly heading into the holiday.

"Pump prices are drifting lower as a record-setting 2.5 million Floridians prepare to travel for Memorial Day weekend," Mark Jenkins, AAA public relations manager said in a statement. "However, ongoing geopolitical tensions could prevent pump prices from falling below year-ago levels during the holiday weekend."

Experts currently project gas prices will be around the same as Memorial Day Weekend in 2023. The statewide average was $3.41 per gallon during last year's holiday.

According to GasBuddy, the good projections stem from the steady decline in gas prices over the last month.

"The news continues to be good for motorists ahead of Memorial Day, with gasoline prices again falling, making it four straight weeks of declines for the national average as we get closer to the start of the summer driving season," Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, said in a statement.
