Plane loses wheel at takeoff, lands safely in Denver

No one was injured.

DENVER — A United flight that lost a wheel on takeoff landed safely at Denver International Airport on Monday.

United Flight 1001, which was destined for Denver, took off from the Los Angeles International Airport just before 7 a.m. Pacific Time, according to FlightAware. A statement from United Airlines says the Boeing 757-200 lost one of its wheels during takeoff.

The flight landed safely in Denver at 10:10 a.m.

United said they are investigating the cause of the malfunction.

There were 174 passengers and seven crewmembers on the flight. No one was injured.

A wheel also fell off a United flight at takeoff in San Francisco earlier this year. That was part of a series of mishaps on flights that led the Federal Aviation Administration to tighten its oversight of the airline.

Boeing has been under fire since two 737 Max jets crashed in 2018 in Indonesia and 2019 in Ethiopia, killing 346 people. The FAA and other regulators grounded the aircraft worldwide for more than a year and a half.

Then in January, a panel covering an unused emergency exit blew off a Max during an Alaska Airlines flight. Pilots landed the 737 Max safely and no one was seriously injured, but the incident led to closer scrutiny of the company. A string of current and former Boeing employees have also been raising concerns about the company's manufacturing processes.

On Sunday, the Justice Department said Boeing agreed to plead guilty to a criminal fraud charge stemming from the two deadly crashes of 737 Max jetliners. Prosecutors say Boeing violated a 2021 deal that had shielded the company from prosecution earlier.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
