TAMPA, Fla. — As Hurricane Beryl ripped through the Caribbean, cruises had to adjust their itineraries and change some destinations.
Many ships that were en route to the Cayman Islands, Honduras and Jamaica will be going to other tropical destinations to avoid the storm.
Here is a breakdown of the changes:
Carnival Cruise Line
The Carnival Horizon that was set to go to Cozumel, Mexico on Thursday will now go to Nassau, Bahamas on Friday and the visit to Grand Cayman on Wednesday was canceled.
The Carnival Liberty pushed back its trip to Cozumel from Tuesday to Friday.
“The safety of our guests and crew is paramount, and we are continuing to monitor forecasts and factor in guidance from the National Hurricane Center, U.S. Coast Guard, and the local port authorities to provide timely updates to our guests as more information becomes available,” cruise officials said on their website.
Royal Caribbean
Icon of the Sea, which departed from Miami, will now go to Cozumel and Costa Maya in Mexico instead of going to St. Maarten and St. Thomas. The Wonder of the Seas skipped over Honduras and Costa Maya and will instead go to Nassau. The Harmony of the Seas also skipped Honduras and will go to Cozumel and Costa Maya, according to Cruise Industry News.
Norwegian Cruise Line
The Breakaway ship was supposed to stop in Honduras, Harvest Caye in Belize, Costa Maya and Cozumel. Almost the entire itinerary was changed and guests will now visit Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic, St. Thomas, Tortola and Great Stirrup Cay in the Bahamas, according to a letter the cruise line sent out to guests.
The Norwegian Jade also had its route altered with canceled visits to Falmouth, Jamaica; Geroge Town, Grand Cayman; and Cozumel. The ship will now be going to San Juan, Puerto Rico; Tortola, British Virgin Islands; and Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, according to a letter.
Margaritaville at Sea
The new cruise ship that leaves out of Tampa Bay will be heading to Nassau instead of Progreso, Mexico, according to their public relations team.
Disney Cruise Line
The Disney Fantasy which left Port Canaveral on Saturday was supposed to dock in Jamaica on Wednesday but replaced it with a day at sea, according to the blog Inside the Magic.
Hurricane Beryl's route
The storm made landfall at Grenada's Carriacou Island and now is moving toward Jamaica as a Category 4 storm. Forecasters from the National Hurricane Center said it will be at or near major intensity while it passes near Jamaica on Wednesday and the Cayman Islands on Wednesday night.
It was a Category 5 storm on Tuesday before weakening but is still expected to bring life-threatening winds and storm surge to affected areas.
