Deadly crash shuts down NB lanes of Veterans Expressway

Troopers said a motorcyclist was killed after swerving into the path of a pickup truck.

TAMPA, Fla. — A deadly crash shut down all northbound lanes of the Veterans Expressway on Tuesday afternoon.

The crash happened just after 4 p.m. near mile marker 8. 

The Florida Highway Patrol said a 65-year-old man was riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle by the entrance to the express lane while a 26-year-old man was driving his Ford F-150 with a trailer in the inside travel lane.

Troopers said the motorcyclist went to change lanes, but swerved into the path of the pickup truck.

"Despite evasive maneuvers," the driver of the pickup truck crashed into the motorcycle, according to FHP.

The motorcycle overturned and came to a rest in the northbound lanes along with the pickup truck.

The motorcyclist was transported to a local hospital as a trauma alert and later died from his injuries. The driver of the pickup truck was not injured.

Traffic was backed up to before Exit 4: Hillsborough Avenue - State Road 580 for several hours. All lanes are now back open.
