HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — Plans are in the works to make changes to a busy road in Tampa.
The Fowler Avenue corridor is the home to Tampa staples like the University of South Florida and Moffitt Cancer Center, but many of its businesses and infrastructure are in need of upgrades.
The roadway sees more than 60,000 cars per day. It’s also among the more dangerous roads in Hillsborough County for pedestrians which is why more pedestrian and bicycle crossings are being added.
Speed enforcements are prevalent. On top of that, the once popular shopping plaza in the area, the University Square Mall, is still being demolished.
A rapid bus line could also be coming to connect the area to Downtown Tampa. But plans are underway to do more than that. Renderings show mixed-use shops and restaurants, expansions for Moffitt and more.
Hillsborough County leaders recently moved forward with plans to study the area to get feedback on what needs to be done and opportunities for growth.
For now, this project is still in that study phase. A timeline for when we could see all this come to fruition hasn’t been set yet.
