New transit option Sunrunner set to launch in St. Pete; free rides for 6 months

PSTA’s Sunrunner is set to launch Friday, Oct. 21. The new premier service will take riders from downtown to St. Pete Beach with limited stops.

PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — A new way to travel to and from our award-winning beaches is about to launch in St. Pete. It’s called the Sunrunner — A new public transit line in Pinellas that's been in the works for years.

The bus rapid transit service will take riders from Downtown St. Pete to St. Pete beach with limited stops, almost like a train. The bus offers free Wi-Fi, bike racks, multidoor boarding and easy smartphone payment options.

You can park in lots or street parking next to stops along the route and then wait at the bus stop for pickup. For the next six months, PSTA is offering the service for free.

Public Relations Manager Stephanie Rank says the transit agency wants to make sure people experience what public transportation can be.

"This is a great introducer for services that we offer throughout the county. The Sunrunner is that premier service. Every 15 minutes, and that's what people want. They want that reliability."

After the six-month free service is up, a ride along the Sunrunner will cost $2.25 for each way, just like the cost of the regular rides for all other routes on PSTA.

Pickup times will be every 15 minutes from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., and every 15 minutes from 8 p.m. to midnight.

The Sunrunner is set to launch Friday, October 21.
