Fire at former Sonny's BBQ location temporarily shuts down part of Busch Boulevard

All eastbound lanes of Busch Boulevard between North 22nd Street and North 26th Street were closed for several hours.

TAMPA, Fla. — All eastbound lanes of Busch Boulevard at North 22nd Street were temporarily closed to traffic after a vacant commercial restaurant caught fire Tuesday evening in Tampa.

Tampa Fire Rescue crews arrived just before 7 p.m. to find heavy smoke and fire coming from the roof and front portion of the former Sonny's BBQ location.

"Firefighters initially entered the building but were forced to exit the structure when fire conditions rapidly deteriorated, and the roofing structural components of the restaurant began to collapse," Tampa Fire Rescue wrote in an update.

A second alarm was triggered for backup and firefighters battled flames using multiple hoses and an aerial ladder truck. The fire was under control about an hour later.

All eastbound lanes of Busch Boulevard between North 22nd Street and North 26th Street were closed through Tuesday night, reopening overnight Wednesday.

No one was injured, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

2 Alarm E. Busch Blvd. Vacant Restaurant Fire

Just before 1900 Hrs., #TampasBravest responded to a reported vacant commercial restaurant fire located in the 2400 Block of E. Busch Blvd. Multiple 9-1-1 callers reported seeing heavy smoke coming from the roof of the vacant restaurant. First arriving fire crews found a single-story commercial restaurant with heavy smoke and fire from the roof and front portion of the building. Firefighters initially entered the building but were forced to exit the structure when fire conditions rapidly deteriorated, and the roofing structural components of the restaurant began to collapse. A second alarm was requested for manpower as firefighters battled flames from the exterior of the building, using multiple hose lines and aerial ladder truck, until the fire was deemed under control approximately one hour later. There were no reported injuries to civilians or firefighters. The cause of the fire is under investigation by Tampa Fire Marshal investigators.
