TAMPA, Fla — As many of you travel for the holidays, December is National Impaired Driving Prevention Month. With that in mind, there’s a statewide effort to make sure you stay safe on the roads.
Don’t drink and drive: it’s an age-old slogan many of us were taught well before we ever learned how to drive.
And yet, Florida Highway Patrol reports, our state has seen a record number of deadly crashes caused by impaired drivers.
That's 140 so far this year. The previous record was 128 in 2018.
Its why FHP and Attorney General Ashley Moody are warning against drunk driving.
Their safe holiday driving tips include:
- Never drink and drive.
- Don’t let friends drive under the influence.
- Get a designated driver.
- Use the ride sharing options out there or call a cab.
- Stay alert, watch out for reckless driving, especially at night.
- Buckle up.
Within the coming weeks expect more officers out and more DUI checkpoints.
If you see an impaired driver, in addition to 911- you can always call *FHP or *3-4-7 to report it.
