MIAMI — Miami-Dade Police arrested nearly 150 people as part of its initiative to crack down on drivers who unlawfully and recklessly drove their ATVs, motorcycles, and dirt bikes during the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend.
Police began their initiative on Friday as a joint effort between the Homeland Security Bureau, Priority Response Team and Motors Unit and the Florida Highway Patrol.
"We have encountered visitors who come to our county to block roads and interfere with the flow of traffic. Participating in such activities will result in police action including arrests, citations, and your vehicle being impounded," said Miami-Dade Police Director Stephanie Daniels to CBS Miami.
On Friday, police arrested about 61 people. They made another 35 arrests on Saturday and another 48 on Sunday, bringing the three-day total to 144. Miami-Dade police also said they issued 554 citations, seized 20 guns, impounded 58 vehicles, and recovered 14 stolen cars.
Video on social media showed several law enforcement vehicles on patrol.
Miami-Dade police, the Broward Sheriff's Office, the Florida Highway Patrol, and other local law enforcement agencies said they would not tolerate any ATV or dirt bikers riding recklessly, blocking traffic, riding against it, popping wheelies or riding on sidewalks.
