MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. — Florida Highway Patrol troopers closed down southbound Interstate 75 at University Parkway on the Manatee/Sarasota County line for hours Wednesday to work a deadly crash.
Video from Sky 10 showed the crash involved multiple cars and an 18-wheeler. Florida Highway Patrol reports four sedans, a pick-up truck, van, SUV and two semi-trucks were involved in a crash, killing two people.
According to a crash report, one semi-truck was traveling south on I-75 with the seven passenger cars and second semi-truck ahead of it prior to the crash.
The FHP said all vehicles began slowing for traffic congestion, but the semi-truck failed to do the same striking several cars and causing several others to "lunge" forward across the interstate.
While a majority of those involved suffered minor injuries, a 72-year-old man in a van and a 22-year-old woman in a sedan were killed in the crash, according to the FHP.
All lanes reopened about five hours later. The crash remains under investigation.
