HAINES CITY, Fla — A man was cited after his alleged "careless driving" caused a major crash involving five cars on Highway 17-92 in Haines City, authorities said.

The crash, which occurred around 3:24 p.m. Tuesday, closed all westbound lanes and required joint efforts from Haines City officers and fire crews, the Haines City Police Department said in a news release.

The man cited, who hasn't been identified, was reportedly driving a 2022 Ram truck eastbound before losing control and crossing the median into oncoming traffic. Haines City police said the man's truck hit several cars before flipping over and coming to a stop on its roof, blocking all westbound lanes.

The driver of the truck sustained injuries and was taken to a local trauma center, police said. Another driver who reportedly suffered minor injuries from the crash was taken to a local hospital by Polk County Fire Rescue.

The man was cited for careless driving and driving on the wrong side of the road, according to law enforcement. Police said three of the five cars involved were towed from the scene due to being heavily damaged.

Haines City Police Chief Greg Goreck stated Tuesday's crash "underscores the dangers of reckless driving."

“Our officers responded rapidly to ensure the safety of all involved and to reopen the road as quickly as possible," Goreck said in the release. "We remind all drivers to stay vigilant when driving as you never know when an incident like this may occur.”

Haines City Fire Chief Drew Neubrand commended the quick response and coordination of his crews and Polk County Fire Rescue in a statement.

"The efficiency and professionalism displayed today ensured that the situation was handled swiftly and safely,” Neubrand said in the release.

At this time, Haines City police are still investigating the crash, according to law enforcement.
