FHP seeks driver in Howard Frankland Bridge hit-and-run

A minor injury was reported, according to FHP.

TAMPA, Fla. — A speeding driver likely caused a multi-car crash Sunday morning in the northbound lanes of the Howard Frankland Bridge that caused an hour-long traffic backup.

It happened around 10:45 a.m. at the hump heading toward Tampa from Pinellas County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Law enforcement reopened the lanes around 11:30 a.m.

Troopers said the driver, possibly in a red Mercedes-AMG, was speeding in and out of traffic. At some point, the car hit the side of a Volkswagen sedan, causing the sedan to rotate and crash into the back of a Toyota RAV4.

The Toyota then crashed its front-end into the concrete median. Afterward, the speeding car's driver sped off, according to FHP.
