AAA: Florida gas prices fall to the lowest level of the year

This time last year, drivers in the Sunshine State were paying 37 cents more at $3.41 per gallon.

TAMPA, Fla. — Just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday, gas prices in Florida have fallen to a new 2023 low.

According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), the average gas price on Sunday was $3.04 per gallon, which is 15 cents less than a week ago. It's also "the lowest daily average price since late December 2022."

This time last year, drivers were paying 37 cents more at $3.41 per gallon.

"More than half of Florida gas stations now have gasoline priced below $3 a gallon," AAA spokesperson Mark Jenkins said in a statement. "While there could be some fluctuations in the coming weeks, AAA expects gas prices to remain low through the holidays, unless oil prices suddenly spike."

The reason behind the drop at the pump is the decrease in oil prices, AAA explains. Crude oil went down from $93 a barrel in late September to $72 a barrel last week.

The state average also dropped from $3.69 to $3.04 per gallon at the same time.

Here's a breakdown of Florida gas price averages from AAA:

  • Sunday: $3.07
  • Saturday: $3.10
  • Week Ago: $3.22
  • Month Ago: $3.30
  • One Year Ago: $3.51

Here are some ways AAA says to save on gas::

  • Combine errands to limit driving time.
  • Shop around for the best gas prices in your community.
  • Pay with cash. Some retailers charge extra per gallon for customers who pay with a credit card.
  • Remove excess weight in your vehicle. Every 100 pounds taken out of the vehicle improves fuel economy by 1-2 percent.
  • Drive conservatively. Aggressive acceleration and speeding reduces fuel economy.
