TAMPA, Fla. — Florida gas prices hit the lowest daily average since the beginning of the year over the weekend.

The price on Sunday was $3.11 per gallon, which is the lowest since Jan. 23, according to a report by AAA

The falling oil prices are causing a downward trend because the cost of producing gasoline decreases depending on the U.S. price for a barrel of oil.

"It has been 237 days since Florida gas prices were below $3 a gallon, but that streak could come to an end soon," said AAA spokesperson Mark Jenkins. "Oil prices suffered big losses in recent weeks, due to global economic concerns and the belief that global fuel supplies could begin to outpace demand. This could enable the state average to fall below $3 a gallon before October."

Gas prices in Tampa Bay

In the Tampa, St. Petersburg and Clearwater areas, the average was $3.10 a gallon on Monday, which was almost the same as a week ago but down from last year. In the areas of Bradenton, Sarasota and Venice, the current average is $3.05 a gallon, almost the same as a week ago but down from last year.

The national average on Monday was $3.20 a gallon.

The most expensive cities in the Sunshine State for gas are West Palm, Naples and Gainesville, while the cheapest are in the panhandle.
