ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — In just four months, Florida's toll relief program has saved Florida drivers hundreds of millions of dollars in savings, according to the Florida Department of Transportation.

In a news release, FDOT says that since the program started in April, over 1.2 million customers have reaped the benefits of more than $164.5 million in toll relief credits every month. In July, customers received $41.1 million in credits.

The toll relief program is meant to reduce toll expenses for drivers, giving SunPass customers with at least 35 monthly toll transactions a 50% credit to their account. SunPass customers already save 25% on average for tolls, FDOT says.

Officials say the 2023 toll relief program offered around $470 million, giving Floridians an average savings of nearly $400 each. Governor Ron DeSantis and the Florida Legislature decided to extend the program earlier this year, "reaffirming their commitment to serving Florida drivers," the release reads.

“The Toll Relief Program offers FDOT a chance to provide commuters, small business owners, and other frequent travelers with relief in a time when prices on everything else are rising,” FDOT Secretary Jared W. Perdue said in a statement. “Thank you Governor DeSantis for your leadership in bringing this highly successful program back for another year.”

According to the SunPass website, those who are already customers do not need to register for the program, but do need to meet the following requirements:

  • SunPass account or Florida interoperable account in good standing
  • Customers with two-axle vehicles only
  • A properly mounted transponder with 35 or more paid transactions that occur within a calendar month
  • SunPass or Florida interoperable customers traveling on the toll facilities in Florida that accept electronic toll payment

The Florida toll relief program currently runs until March 2025.
