Tampa -- Could a solution to easing road congestion be express toll lanes? The Florida Department of Transportation is considering a project called the Tampa Bay Express, a system of new toll lanes where drivers could pay a price and bypass congestion.
The lanes are being considered on I-275, I-75 and I-4 through Hillsborough and Pinellas counties. Most of the lanes would be built in the middle of the interstates using the existing medians, but FDOT said some land may need to be purchased as part of the footprint.
The toll price would be based on the time of day and travel conditions, so you could pay anywhere from under a dollar to over $10 during peak hours.
Right now, FDOT is in the very beginning stages of this project and is holding public input meetings to get the opinions of drivers.
"If you're late for an interview or late to pick up your child at day care and $25 is the late fee and the toll is $8, it makes financial sense to hop in the toll lane", said Kris Carson, FDOT public information officer. "It helps not only the new express lanes, but also helping general purpose lanes as well go faster so its a win win."
We opened up the conversation on our 10 News Facebook page and comments were overwhelmingly against the proposed plan.
Michael S. posted: "Why don't the high taxes I already pay, build these roads? Why do I need to pay more tax to use certain roads?"
David C wrote: "It's a nightmare on the ones I've been on in other states.. It's terribly confusing if you aren't familiar with them. Accidents tie them up for hours."
However, Tamara R. posted: "Definitely! I appreciate my SunPass so much when I can breeze by those lines."
FDOT is still looking for funding for The Tampa Bay Express. If the lanes are built, the toll money will go straight back into operation and maintenance.
