58-year-old driver killed after slamming into back of semi-truck in Polk County

The crash shut down all lanes of Highway 98 North for about five hours, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office.

LAKELAND, Fla. — A 58-year-old driver from Lakeland was killed after crashing into the rear of a semi-truck on Highway 98 North in Polk County.

The crash happened Friday around 12:40 p.m. at the intersection of Old Soldier Road and Highway 98 North in Lakeland, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.

The stretch of the highway where the crash occurred is reportedly under construction. Deputies said the semi-truck was carrying a trailer of metal pipes from a construction site before attempting to turn left from Old Soldier Road onto the highway.

Meanwhile, the 58-year-old was traveling south on 98 North in a Toyota Corolla before colliding with the back of the truck as it was turning. Deputies said the driver was killed.

All lanes of 98 North were closed from approximately 12:40 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, about fives hours.

The sheriff's office says the crash is still under investigation.
