TAMPA, Fla. — A man is dead after he chased his dog into oncoming traffic while trying to help his girlfriend involved in a car accident, Florida Highway Patrol said in a news release.
The 23-year-old man drove to a minor two-vehicle crash on US-301 at the northbound entrance of Interstate 75 at the request of his girlfriend around 9 p.m. Saturday, July 13, FHP said.
When the man arrived, he reportedly left his car to help her when his dog, a Doberman, jumped out and ran into the road. The man chased after his dog before a Honda CRV hit him, FHP reported.
The 31-year-old woman driving the Honda was not injured.
The Doberman died at the scene of the crash, and its owner was brought to a nearby hospital, where he later died from injuries, according to the agency.
Editor's note: The Florida Highway Patrol said the crash happened on U.S. 301 and not U.S. 92, as previously stated. This story has been updated.
