Northbound Crosstown Connector lanes reopened after fiery crash

The wrong-way crash happened after a driver tried to make a U-turn on the one-way road.

TAMPA, Fla. — The Crosstown Connector reopened Thursday after a fiery crash left a driver in critical condition, authorities said.

The crash happened just before 9 a.m. Thursday in the northbound lanes from the Selmon Expressway to Interstate 4, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the driver of a Dodge pickup truck was heading north on the Crosstown Connector when he made a U-turn and began heading south in the northbound lanes. The truck continued until it crashed into a concrete barrier, splitting it in half and causing it to catch fire.

FHP identified the driver as a 41-year-old St. Petersburg man who was taken to an area hospital in critical condition. The agency did not offer any other information regarding the driver.

The northbound lanes of the Crosstown Connector from the Selmon Expressway reopened at 12:38 p.m. Thursday.
