TAMPA, Fla. — A crash involving a pickup truck and a tractor-trailer caused major delays Monday morning on I-275 in Hillsborough County.
According to Florida Highway Patrol, the pickup was changing lanes and accelerating past other cars when it overtook the tractor-trailer as its own trailer began to fishtail. Troopers say that caused the 35-year-old Tampa man driving the pickup to lose control and collide with the front of the larger truck just before 9 a.m. near Lois Avenue.
The tractor-trailer ended up crashing into the guardrail, then rotating and flipping onto its side, which blocked all the southbound lanes of I-275.
The pickup jackknifed and also blocked parts of the interstate, which became littered with propane tanks and yard debris.
The pickup driver was issued a citation for making an improper lane change. Neither he nor the 28-year-old Tampa man driving the tractor-trailer were hurt. Both were wearing seatbelts.
Drivers were temporarily detoured. But, southbound I-275 has since reopened.
Meanwhile, investigators were dispatched to the scenes of at least two other serious crashes involving overturned trucks within a mile of each other in Sarasota County.
One of them was a deadly crash involving an overturned cement truck on I-75 southbound at mile marker 195 in Sarasota. The other crash involved an overturned septic truck on I-75 southbound near mile marker 194.
