Pinellas County, Florida -- Four people were injured in a serious accident involving a wrong-way driver that closed the Belleair Causeway for several hours Wednesday morning.
Pinellas Sheriff's investigators say around 6:55 a.m., Corporal Kannika Nimithkoune was heading east on the Belleair Causeway when she saw a Chevy Tahoe traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of the causeway.
As Corporal Nimithkoune tried to avoid a head-on collision, the driver of the Tahoe hit the back driver's side of Nimithkoune's marked Crown Victoria.
The Tahoe then hit the concrete barrier and traveled northwest where it hit the front driver's side of a Ford van that was traveling east on the causeway. The Ford van then rotated and hit the front of a Dodge truck.
The Chevy Tahoe continued, hitting another concrete barrier before coming to a rest in the westbound lane.
The driver of the Chevy Tahoe Mark Hindes, 33; driver of the Ford van, Sheron Nagy-Solymosi, 58; driver and passenger of the Dodge truck, Corey Koonce, 53, and Jack Beyers, 27, were all taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Corporal Nimithkoune was not injured in the crash.
Investigators say speed and/or impairment may be factors in the crash. The investigation continues.
