Couple injured, 1 critically, after motorcycle crash in Indiana

"They are both lucky to be alive," the couple's son said.

INDIANAPOLIS — Two people were injured, one critically, after a motorcycle crash Saturday evening near Castleton.

Indiana State Police said the crash happened on Interstate 465 near the Interstate 69 exit, involving a motorcycle and another car just after 5 p.m. Nov 9. Police said the motorcycle clipped the side of the other car, which caused the motorcycle to crash.

Officers said the female passenger on the motorcycle was critically injured. The driver of the motorcycle was injured but is expected to survive, according to an ISP spokesperson.

On Monday, Nov. 11, 13News spoke to the couple’s son, who said his parents are 65-year-old Brian Penley and 66-year-old Dianne Penley.

“They are both lucky to be alive,” Chris Penley said. “Several people stopped to check on them, and one of them happened to be a nurse.”

Chris said the nurse sprang into action and grabbed a medical kit from her car and started CPR. Others flagged down first responders who struggled to get through the heavy interstate traffic.

Without the good Samaritans, Chris believes his mom would’ve died at the scene.

“This nurse, that we don’t know who she is yet, was definitely an angel. She saved my mom’s life,” Chris said.

Now, he wants to say "thank you" to those who helped give his mom a second chance.

Chris said his dad will undergo surgery later this week for multiple broken ribs and fractures. His mom is still in the ICU on a ventilator while doctors monitor a brain bleed and multiple broken bones.
