New dating app uses core values to connect Tampa Bay singles

Tired of dating app duds? Weaver is using a new strategy for connection.

TAMPA, Fla. — Wouldn't it be nice to see a red flag before you swipe right?

A new Tampa-centric dating app is making it happen.

Weaver launched last month exclusively in the Tampa Bay area to connect singles within a 60-mile radius of the city. And unlike other dating apps on the market, it focuses on building long-term relationships through core values.

Here's how it works.

Users answer 26 "Pillar Questions" focused on religion, politics, emotionality, life attitudes and money.

The idea is to be upfront about some of the most divisive issues that typically drive breakups.

After answering questions about themselves, users will then select which answers would be acceptable for future matches and which ones would be "red flags & dealbreakers."

When it comes time to swipe, those designated red flags will flash in a banner at the top of someone's profile, alerting users before they scroll down to read more.

Weaver uses photos, too, but they're not the main focus. Photos appear in smaller icons in the app to keep the core values front and center.

The free version of the app allows users to see three profiles a day. A paid version, which is offered at around $15 a month, lets users see up to 15 profiles per day. Remember, the idea is intentional dating to build long-term relationships, so it's good to be choosy.

Why is Weaver just in Tampa?

Weaver actually launched nationwide in 2022 but struggled to stand out as a startup among dozens of established dating apps.

That's when founder Mara Rudolph met entrepreneur and Tampa native Matthew Spaulding through a site connecting investors with startup founders. the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Spaulding, now Weaver's chief technology officer, reportedly had the idea to launch the app locally given the number of young professionals flocking to the Tampa Bay area.

You can download the app now on Apple and Google Play.
