HUDSON, Fla. — Kids in our community have a new way to learn about water health and conservation. The Girl Scouts of West Central Florida recently unveiled the Wonders of Water Educational Hub at Girl Scouts Camp Indian Echo in Hudson.
It's all thanks to grant money they received through the Tampa Bay Water Mini-grant program.
The Girl Scouts received roughly $9,000 to help them create new programming with informational signage, as well as a new water filtration system and lake aeration system.
Renee Murch, vice president of camps for Girl Scouts West Central Florida, said, "Some girls have no knowledge of where the water comes from when they turn on their tap. When they leave this program, they'll understand where that water comes from — the water they drink and bathe with — they'll understand how they can preserve and protect that water, and they'll understand how they can encourage others to do the same thing."
In total, Tampa Bay Water is giving away $50,000 in "mini-grants" to support projects that align with their conservation mission. The funds are available to non-profits, schools, universities, and community organizations.
Brandon Moore, a spokesperson with Tampa Bay Water explained, "Tampa Bay Water is looking to partner with organizations who share our environmental stewardship goals to protect our drinking water sources and conserve water in the Tampa Bay region."
The deadline to apply for a grant is this Friday, Nov. 22.
