Florida Manatee deaths have risen at an alarming rate this past month, according to a report by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
In just the first six weeks of 2021, FWC has recorded 317 manatee deaths. That's nearly half of the deaths that occurred in all of 2020 - which was 637.
When compared to the first six weeks of previous years, manatee deaths in 2021 were three times higher than the average.
The reason for the peak is still being investigated, as more than 200 manatees still require an autopsy. But, according to FWC, roughly 25 to 30 percent of manatee deaths are caused by watercrafts.
While investigations continue, boaters can follow these tips:
- Abide by the posted speed zone signs.
- Wear polarized sunglasses to reduce glare on the surface of the water.
- Try to stay in deep-water channels whenever possible.
- Avoid boating over seagrass beds and shallow areas. Manatees are often found in shallow, slow-moving rivers, estuaries, lagoons, and coastal areas.
