SARASOTA, Fla. — "Pommel horse guy" Stephen Nedoroscik and seasoned Olympian Brody Malone captured hearts across America when they propelled the U.S. men's gymnastics team to a bronze medal on Monday, the team's first since 2008.
Their high-flying skills may have you wondering — where did these guys train to get so good?
The answer is right here in the Tampa Bay area. Nedoroscik and Malone both train at EVO Gymnastics, a 40,000-square-foot world-class gymnastics training center in Sarasota.
EVO, which has a few Olympians on its coaching staff, takes pride in offering a "positive and encouraging environment" to everyone from beginners to Olympic champions.
In addition to the bronze medalists, the Sarasota gym has some major representation in Paris. It's also home to Olympic team alternate Shane Wiskus, Olympic team coach Sam Mikulak, Olympic team assistant coach Syque Caesar and the Olympic replacement athlete’s coach Kevin Mazeika.
Mikulak represented the U.S. at the 2012, 2016 and 2020 Olympics; Wiskus represented the U.S. at the 2020 Olympics and Caesar represented Bangladesh at the 2012 Olympics.
Mazeika, a member of the USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame, has decades of experience coaching Olympians, world champions and dozens of national champions. He was the head coach of the U.S. Men’s Team when they won team medals in back-to-back Olympic Games, silver in 2004 and bronze in 2008.
You can watch Nedoroscik compete in pommel horse event finals this Saturday as he aims to secure another medal for Team USA. He tied Ireland's Rhys McClenaghan for the highest qualifying score among the eight finalists with a 15.200.
