ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Tampa Bay Buccaneers may have found themselves out of Super Bowl LVIII, but the region still had strong representation inside Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
St. Petersburg native and Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling made history for the University of South Florida during the big game as he became the first bull to score a touchdown in a Super Bowl.
The Lakewood High School alum scored the first touchdown for the Kansas City team toward the end of the third quarter thanks to a 16-yard pass from Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. This gave the team's first lead in the game at 13-10.
USF Athletics celebrated the history-making moment with a post on Facebook during the game.
Tampa Bay saw a few other hometown players featured on the big stage, including 49ers wide receiver Ray-Ray McCloud from Tampa and Chiefs wide receiver Richie James Jr. from Sarasota.
This marked Valdes-Scantling's second consecutive Super Bowl win with the Kansas City Chiefs when the team won 38–35 over the Philadelphia Eagles at Super Bowl LVII.
The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers at Super Bowl LVIII with a final score of 25-22.
