Dolphins release QB Josh Freeman

Dolphins release QB Josh Freeman
Josh Freeman was the first pick for the Buccaneers in 2009.

MIAMI (AP) - Quarterback Josh Freeman's bid to jump-start his career with the Miami Dolphins has ended even before training camp.

Freeman was released Friday by the Dolphins, who open camp next week.

The 2009 first-round draft pick signed a one-year contract in April. He has 60 career starts but hasn't played since October 2013, and during offseason workouts he failed to seriously challenge Matt Moore for the backup job behind Ryan Tannehill.

Moore has been with the Dolphins since 2011.

Freeman threw for 27 touchdowns and 4,065 yards with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2012, but was released during the 2013 season. He has briefly been with the Vikings and Giants.
