Buccaneers will release Randy Gregory after failing to report to Tampa Bay

The Buccaneers signed Gregory on April 4, but he never rejoined the team at One Buc Place after earning his one-year deal.

TAMPA, Fla. — The Randy Gregory era is over before it even started.

During tonight's Buccaneers-Jaguars preseason game, the broadcast crew announced the team has reached an agreement with the linebacker and he will be released this week.

Ronde Barber added the team has recouped Gregory's signing bonus in the process.

After signing with the team on April 4, the linebacker did not report for mandatory offseason training activities and has not been with the team for the entirety of training camp.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers placed him on the Reserve/Did Not Report list. He signed a $3 million deal with the team, but due to the accrual of fines, we expect the Bucs to get most, if not all, of that money back.

Gregory entered the league as a second-round pick of the Dallas Cowboys in the 2015 NFL Draft. He remained with Dallas through the 2021 season, before later playing for the Denver Broncos (2022-23) and San Francisco 49ers (2023). He has appeared in 72 career regular season games, recording 117 tackles (27 for loss), 69 quarterback hits, 22.0 sacks, 10 forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and one interception.

Gregory has had plenty of legal troubles during his tenure in the league. He also has been outspoken about his mental health struggles.

In June, Gregory also sued the NFL and Broncos because of fines relating to his THC usage. In the complaint filed to the Arapahoe County District Court, the Jacksonville native said he was prescribed Dronabinol for social anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorders but was denied accommodations to treat those disabilities with that medicine.

The Buccaneers will now rely on a collection of Joe Tryon-Shoyinka, Yaya Diaby, Anthony Nelson, rookie Chris Braswell, Jose Ramirez and Markees Watts to fill that void.
