The One Buc: Trey Palmer

In his second season in the NFL, wide receiver Trey Palmer is one the fastest and most confident players on the Buccaneers roster.

TAMPA, Fla. — The 10 Tampa Bay team goes one-on-one with a Buccaneers player every week. In this week's edition of "The One Buc," sports reporter David Schiele speaks with wide receiver Trey Palmer.

When the Tampa Bay Buccaneers drafted Palmer in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft, they knew they were adding an explosive weapon to their offense. The Kentwood, LA native a scorching 4.33-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine, one of the fastest times of any receiver in his class. 

As a rookie, he reached a top speed of 20.78 mph on a 56-yard touchdown against the Philadelphia Eagles in the wild-card round of the playoffs. He continues to be a deep threat this season, averaging 13.7 yards per catch. 

"I think it's just God. God just blessed me with the speed," Palmer said. 

As a multi-sport athlete at Kentwood High School, he showcased his speed on the football field, baseball diamond and track. Palmer decided to stick with football, committing to Louisiana State University (LSU) and winning a national championship with the Tigers. After three seasons in Baton Rouge, Palmer transferred to Nebraska. In his one season as a Cornhusker, he shattered the records for most receptions by a wide receiver, receiving yards in a season and receiving yards in a game. 

Palmer's hands are just as great off the field as on the field. He enjoys handyman work, such as fixing cars, welding and carpentry. 

"It's just always been my thing since I was little. I always wanted to get my hands on stuff...it's just always been in me," he said. 

The 23-year-old also has high confidence in his thumbs. He always finds time to play the latest NBA 2k video game with teammates. He claims to have beaten fellow receiver Mike Evans and defensive back Christian Izien in previous virtual competitions.

"They give me a little tough battle, but I'm like that on 2k," he said. 

Palmer and the Buccaneers take on the San Francisco 49ers this Sunday at Raymond James Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
