TAMPA, Fla. — Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield is staying with the team after signing a new three-year deal on Wednesday.
During a press conference inside the AdventHealth Training Center, Mayfield expressed he is ready to bring a Lombardi Trophy back to the Tampa Bay area.
"Knowing that we have a chance to bring back some key pieces and make a further run in the playoffs, that's important to me," Mayfield said. "I'm a winner at heart. I hate losing, so knowing that we get a lot of guys back and we can continue to build this for years to come is a special team."
When 10 Tampa Bay asked how the free agent process went, Mayfield said there were times of doubt.
"It was hard to think about it because we wanted to be here," Mayfield said. "And just knowing how much we love living here. So that made it hard going through the process of it not happening immediately. It all happens how God had it intended to be."
Mayfield played the 2023 campaign on a one-year deal with Tampa Bay after splitting 2022 between the Carolina Panthers and the Los Angeles Rams.
As a result, Mayfield finished third in the NFL's Comeback Player of the Year voting and posted a career-high 4,044 passing yards, 28 touchdown passes, while throwing only 10 interceptions (94.6 passer rating).
The Bucs QB was one of two players in 2023 with 28-or-more passing touchdowns and 10-or-less interceptions, along with Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott.
Mayfield also became the second player in Bucs history to throw for more than 4,000 passing yards, 25-plus touchdowns and 10-or-less interceptions in a single season along with his predecessor, Tom Brady.
He became the first quarterback in the team's history to record a postseason game with 300-plus passing yards and three-or-more touchdowns, accomplishing the feat in both playoff contests.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have also re-signed five-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Mike Evans, linebacker Lavonte David and retained All-Pro safety Antoine Winfield Jr. using the franchise tag.
