USF football player Teigan Martin dies in car crash in Minnesota

The tight end was killed after he lost control of his car on a county road in Minnesota, according to the local sheriff's office.

MINNESOTA, USA — Teigan Martin, a freshman tight end for the University of South Florida football team, died Monday in a car crash in Minnesota, according to authorities.

The crash happened around 5:05 a.m. on County Road 122 just east of the intersection of County Road 21 in Hollywood Township, the Carver County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.

Deputies learned Martin was speeding eastbound down the road before losing control of his car, a black 2013 BMW M5, according to the sheriff's office.

Martin was wearing his seat belt, deputies said. It is reportedly unknown if alcohol was a factor in Martin's death. Deputies said they are waiting on autopsy results from the Midwest Medical Examiner's Office.

"We are heartbroken by the tragic passing of Teigan Martin," USF head football coach Alex Golesh said in a statement. "His loss is felt profoundly by his teammates, our coaches and staff, and all those who knew and loved him.

"We extend our deepest sympathies to Teigan’s family and friends, and keep them in our thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time."

The football team also posted to X following news of Martin's death.

"We are deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Teigan Martin," the team said in the post. "We extend our thoughts and prayers to Teigan’s family, friends, and all who knew and loved him."

The sheriff's office says the investigation remains ongoing.
