COLUMBIA, S.C. — A NASCAR driver from Indiana is recovering after being seriously injured in a highway crash in South Carolina.
Chris Hacker, a part-time competitor in the NASCAR Xfinity and Craftsman Truck Series and native of Noblesville, released a statement on social media through his representatives Thursday afternoon.
The statement said Hacker was driving through South Carolina while on his way to Daytona when a semi-truck crossed the center lane and hit Hacker's car head-on. According to the statement, Hacker was transported to a local hospital and underwent emergency surgery.
A CT scan showed "numerous injuries," but the statement indicates he is expected to make a full recovery.
Hacker had not announced any NASCAR plans for 2024. He was reinstated by NASCAR in October 2023 after being suspended for a DWI in August. The morning of the accident, Hacker announced on social media he had reached six months of sobriety.
Shortly before 4 p.m. on Feb. 15, Hacker posted an update to social media showing him in a hospital bed with visible injuries to his abdomen and cuts on his arms and hands. Hacker captioned the post, "Hey Alexa, play 'Life is a Highway'" as a light-hearted way of looking at his accident.
