PUERTO PLATA, Dominican Republic — Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco has been formally charged in the Dominican Republic following allegations of sexual abuse and sexual exploitation of a minor, reports say.
In an article from Listin Diario, Puerto Plata prosecutors filed a formal accusation on Monday night.
Juan Recio with ESPN also confirmed the news in a post on X.
The mother of the minor was also accused of trafficking, sexual exploitation and money laundering, the report reads.
The outlet says a request filed in court asks Franco and the mother be sent to trial to "answer for the facts of which they are accused."
The prosecutor in the case, Kelmi Duncan, told the Dominican newspaper, “We are still within the time frame to be able to file conclusive acts.” Originally, the deadline to file charges was July 5, but procedure allows for a 10-day grace period.
Franco has not played since Aug. 12. He was placed on the restricted list for a week on Aug. 14 while MLB launched an investigation.
Franco was moved to administrative leave on Aug. 22 and remained there through the end of the season. Following the start of the 2024 season, his leave extended to July 14.
He continues to get paid his salary while on leave.
The shortstop also faced charges of money laundering and commercial sexual exploitation, but those have since been dismissed.
"He is only being investigated for sexual abuse, kidnapping and seduction of a minor."
