USF plans celebration of life for USF head men's basketball coach

Amir Abdur-Rahim passed away due to complications from a medical procedure. He was just 43 years old.

TAMPA, Fla. — Two celebrations of life are planned to honor the University of South Florida's head men's basketball coach Amir Abdur-Rahim who died earlier this week.

The first service will be hosted by Kennesaw State University where he coached prior to coming to Tampa. It will be on Oct. 27 at 5 p.m.

The second service will be held in Tampa on Nov. 2 at 11 a.m. at the Yuengling Center on USF's campus.

In lieu of flowers, Abdur-Rahim's family is asking anyone wanting to honor his memory to consider doing so by donating to the non-profit Future Foundation. The organization creates after-school classes, family support workshops and corporate mentorships in underserved Georgia communities.

Abdur-Rahim passed away Thursday at just 43 years old. The university shared that he was undergoing a medical procedure at a Tampa-area hospital when complications arose.

In a statement, USF said Coach Abdur-Rahim will be remembered by students, staff and all of Bulls Nation as "a tremendous man & leader with an infectious personality."

He is survived by his wife and their three children.

During this past season, Abdur-Rahim was named the American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. He also led the Bulls to their first regular-season conference championship and to their first-ever top-25 ranking during the regular season.
