GRAND BLANC TOWNSHIP, MI (WNEM) -- Police responded to an unusual situation at the Walmart store in a Michigan town Tuesday morning.

A 45-year-old woman had been living at the store for two days before she was asked to leave by employees at the store.

Employees asked the woman several times to leave and when she refused, they called police.

The woman was uncooperative and said she had nowhere to go. A family member eventually came to the Grand Blanc Township Police Department to pick the woman up.

Police issued the woman a disorderly person ticket.

"When I first made contact with her she was sitting in a chair, she had her laptop in her lap with headphones in," Detective Matt Harburn said.

Harburn said when he tried to talk to the woman she was uncooperative and refused to leave the store.

The woman had been living with her son in Grand Blanc until he kicked her out because of a drinking problem, police said.

A spokesperson for Walmart said the company takes the security of its stores very seriously and this incident didn't put any customers in jeopardy.

Harburn said this is a good lesson for employees about being watchful of their surroundings.

"I would hope that it wouldn't take 48 hours to call us, that if someone's sleeping in the restroom or if someone is homeless in their store, that they'd call us right away so we could handle it appropriately. Then either arrest them or find them help, some place to stay," Harburn said.

Police said the woman likely got lost in the mix of people until store managers reviewed the footage on their security cameras and noticed how long the woman had been in the store.
