(WKBT) -- A man claims he was fired from the English learning center where he worked because his boss thought a blog post about homophones would associate the school with homosexuality.
To be clear: Homophones are words that sound the same but have different meanings and often different spellings, like through and threw or which and witch.
Foreign students learning English can find this concept confusing if homophones do not exist in their native language.
Which is why Tim Torkildson thought it would be a good topic of a blog post at the Nomen Global Language Center in Provo, Utah. As the social media specialist, he often posts about educational topics relevant to the students who attend the school, reports The Salt Lake Tribune.
But Torkildson claims that after he posted about homophones, he was let go for creating the perception that the school promoted a homosexual agenda.
His boss and Nomen owner Clarke Woodger called him into his office after the post was published and told him he was fired.
Torkildson said Woodger complained, "Now our school is going to be associated with homosexuality."
Woodger claims Torkildson's firing had nothing to do with homophone post, but that Torkildson had caused him concern because he would "go off on tangents" at times in his posts.
