Returning from a trip to Peru, William Anthony Sanchez landed at Newark airport and was caught attempting to smuggle 10 pounds of cocaine hidden in food, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Sanchez had stuffed the drugs in a variety of food items: in bags of coffee, white cheese wheels, Pisco Sour mix and nougat cakes, among other "prepared foods, beans, and powders."
The tip off for customs officials was the 88 Oxycodone pills in his carry-on. Once secured in a private room, the rest of Sanchez's luggage was searched and cocaine discovered in the food. All told, the drugs had a street value of $170,000
Smuggling cocaine inside food certainly isn't a new idea. In fact, 2.3 pounds were recentlydiscovered inside fried fish bellies. However, below the belt still seems to be the favorite hiding place for smugglers — numerous flight attendants have been caught this year with gold bars andfake passports down their pants. And let's not forget about the passenger arriving in Bangkok with a six-carat diamond up her rectum.
