Trayvon Martin lawyer calls for change in 'Stand Your Ground' law following Clearwater death

Civil Rights attorney Ben Crump will represent the girlfriend of the man killed in a Clearwater shooting.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Civil Rights attorney Ben Crump will represent the girlfriend of the man killed in a Clearwater shooting.

Crump will join Brittany Jacobs at a 10:30 a.m. Thursday press conference at the Pinellas County Criminal Justice Center, where he will "demand an amendment of discriminatory Stand Your Ground laws."

10News will cover and stream the press conference live at wtsp.com.

Jacobs' boyfriend of nine years, Markeis McGlockton, 28, was shot in front of her outside the Circle-A food store on July 19 by Michael Drejka over a parking space dispute. He later died at a hospital.

Drejka has a concealed weapons permit.

Pinellas County Sheriff's Office investigators decided not to arrest Drejka, citing the state's "stand your ground" law. State prosecutors are currently deciding whether 'stand your ground' actually applies and if they will press charges.

The case has gained nationwide attention, including protests outside the Circle-A store and strong social media reaction as people have taken sides regarding whether Drejka was in danger when he shot McGlockton.

Crump is known for his work representing families in controversial civil rights cases, including the relatives of Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown, whose death sparked riots in Ferguson, Mo., in 2014.
